29th January 2004

r24 launch in palermo

Renault F1’s 2004 car, the R24, was launched today in Palermo, Sicily. The ceremony took place at the Palermo Opera House, the Teatro Massimo. The staged event was followed by a street demonstration of the R24, by Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso.

Jarno Trulli, on the new car: “ I drove the R24 for two days at Barcelona, and had the privilege of completing its first run. I stood in the garage for a long time admiring the car. It is always a special moment, a fantastic emotion. On the R24, the quality of the engineering is impeccable. I felt confident in the car from the first few hundred metres. The driving position is ideal and after 2 years at Renault, I really feel at home in their cars. The aim was to check all the systems were working properly and to see how the car responded to set-up changes. The results on the track have already confirmed what the computers at the factory had predicted. I generally prefer to wait a little before judging, but in spite of lots of little details that need to be sorted out, I am very optimistic for 2004.”

valencia test

Jarno Trulli R24-01, 86 laps,
Franck Montagny R23-05, 106 laps,

Jarno completed 86 laps in the new car today, finishing 8th quickest, before travelling to Palermo for the Renault launch tomorrow (Thursday). Franck Montagny was still testing the old car and was 11th quickest. The lap record was broken twice in the course of the day, by Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari in the morning and immediately in the afternoon by Montoya’s Williams. Both teams seem to be trying to prove a point! 15 drivers were on track, including two Minardis, Pizzonia in the 3rd Williams car and Wirdheim testing for Jaguar. And no sign of McLaren anywhere.

Jarno Trulli R24-01, 59 laps
Franck Montagny R23-05, 111 laps

Renault were joined in Valencia by Williams, Ferrari, Sauber, Toyota, BAR, Jaguar and Minardi. Michael Schumacher was the Ferrari in the Williams sandwich as Marc Gene was fastest, Schumacher second and Montoya third. Jarno was 5th fastest, despite stopping on track with a mechanical failure and only able to complete 59 laps. Franck was 7th in the old car.

barcelona test

Fernando Alonso R24-01, 75 laps, 348 km
Franck Montagny R23-05, 84 laps, 389 km

The Renault F1 Team completed its first week of testing with the R24 today in Barcelona. The car has completed over 1300km during the four days of running, and Fernando Alonso spent the day checking on-board systems and set-ups.
Franck Montagny completed his second day at the wheel of the R23, evaluating a range of tyre constructions and developing electronics for the R24.
Fernando finished the fastest man on track today, ahead of Badoer’s and Schumacher’s Ferraris and three Williams cars. Franck Montagny was 7th.
Pat Symonds, Executive Director of Engineering:
"This week, we have demonstrated the inherent reliability of our package, and I think that it is quite an achievement to complete 1300km in the first week running a new car. Our work this week is a tribute to the quality of design and manufacture in both the engine and the chassis."

22nd January 2004

barcelona test

Fernando Alonso R24-01, 102 laps, 473 km
Franck Montagny R23-05, 131 laps, 607 km

The third day of testing at Barcelona saw the new Renault F1 R24 complete its first full race distance. With Fernando Alonso at the wheel, R24-01 conducted a race simulation during the morning, without any major incidents, before beginning the basic set-up programme in the afternoon. The car completed a total of 473 km.
Franck Montagny began working in the R23. He conducted simulation work, a tyre endurance programme and practiced starts.

Jenson Button broke the track record in his BAR, followed not all that closely by Michael Schumacher, out of hibernation for his first drive since Suzuka. Given this, Alonso’s third place looks reasonable, also given there were 3 Williams drivers on track. The other Renault driver, Montagny, was 12th. Heidfeld was testing for Jordan and they have allowed Timo Glock back in the car for another go, although the drivers had to share one car but not at the same time.
Pat Symonds, Executive Director of Engineering:
"This morning, the R24 completed its first race distance, running a simulated two-stop race. To achieve this so early with a brand new car is very encouraging, and demonstrates our commitment to ensuring reliability is at the top of our agenda this year, in order to exploit the potential we believe this package possesses."

21st January 2004

barcelona test

Jarno Trulli, R24-01, 69 laps, 320 km
Fernando Alonso, R23-05, 102 laps, 473 km

Jarno Trulli today completed his second, and final, day of running with the R24 this week. He completed a further 320 km, including a number of long runs, although he also experienced a technical problem which stopped the car out on the circuit. Running today concentrated on accumulating mileage and working on basic set-ups.
Fernando Alonso completed his testing in the old R23, continuing the electronics development programme for the R24. However, his work was hampered by an engine failure late in the morning.

Also on the track, Williams were still setting the pace with Ralf Schumacher breaking the track record 2 days running. Fernando was again third quickest in the old car, but Jarno was only 10th today. Williams were also testing Nico Rosberg once again and he finished a respectable 7th. Bas Leinders was testing for Jordan, but had an unfortunate crash before he finished his first installation lap, which curtailed his running to 17 laps after the team rebuilt the chassis.
Pat Symonds, Renault Executive Director of Engineering:
"It was another encouraging day for the team. Jarno's running was interrupted with a technical problem, but we nevertheless clocked up a further 320km, including some longer runs. The indications remain very good, and the car is running well with a high fuel load, displaying good consistency."
Tomorrow, Fernando Alonso will run in the R24 for the first time, while Franck Montagny will take over work on the R23.

20th January 2004

the R24 hits the track!!

barcelona test

Jarno Trulli, R24-01, 42 laps, 195 km
Fernando Alonso, R23-05, 89 laps, 412 km

An eventful day in Barcelona where Renault completed a successful first run of the new R24. Jarno Trulli took the wheel of chassis 01, and completed 42 laps during the day, without any problems.
Fernando Alonso was present, driving chassis R23-05, which was fitted with the electronic systems of the R24. He continued development work on these elements.

Elsewhere both Mark Webber and Timo Glock, testing for Jordan for the first time, had spectacular accidents. Both Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya were on duty for Williams and topped the timesheets, with Ralf taking top honours. Fernando Alonso was third, in the old Renault, then the two Ferraris, followed by Jarno a respectable sixth in the R24 and only a tenth off Badoer’s time. Barrichello had a major engine failure during the course of the day.
Fernando Alonso was present, driving chassis R23-05, which was fitted with the electronic systems of the R24. He continued development work on these elements.
Jarno Trulli:
"It was a good first day of testing with the R24. Everything worked well straight away, and we spent the day ironing out the little glitches that come with any new car. The car was well-balanced, and responded well to the set-up changes we tried."
Bob Bell, Technical Director (Chassis):
"This was a very promising start for us. We ran reliably, and the systems on the car functioned as expected. Jarno reported the car to be well-balanced, and he was comfortable in it. The intention today was not to push, rather to build up mileage reliably and with that in mind, I think we had a very successful day."
Pat Symonds, Executive Director of Engineering:
"We ran the R24 for the first time today and completed over 200 km. This is an extremely satisfying result on the first day that the car has turned a wheel. Our programme consisted of systems checks and medium length runs, and all the indications are that the car and engine are behaving as we had predicted. The initial feeling is that we have a very good package."

9th January 2004

jerez test

Jarno Trulli R23-06, 87 laps, 385 km

Franck Montagny R23-05, 77 laps, 340 km

Jarno was third fastest (of 12) today, closely followed by Franck Montagny. Marc Gene’s Williams was fastest of all, just beating fellow team mate Montoya into second place.

Tyre programme:

Trulli concentrated on longer runs using the compounds selected during yesterday’s programme. They represented a definite improvement over long distance.

Chassis programme:

Trulli conducted a damper evaluation programme, although this was cut short by an engine failure. Montagny concentrated on improving the car’s performance over the kerbs, working on suspension and steering geometries.

Other Notes:

The day started out damp, with the team running wet tyres and evaluating set-ups and tyre performance for the conditions.

Pat Symonds, Executive Director of Engineering:

“We have had a good week in Jerez, rounded off by a productive final day. In particular, the results from our tyre testing were very pleasing.”

The Mild Seven Renault F1 Team’s next test session will begin on 20 January at Barcelona.

8th January 2004

jerez test

Jarno Trulli R23-06, 132 laps, 584 km

Franck Montagny R23-05, 82 laps, 363 km

Ferrari and McLaren were keeping a low profile in todays test, as the first four time slots were occupied by two Williams, Montoya fastest, and two Renaults. Montagny was 3rd quickest and Trulli 4th.

Tyre programme

Today’s programme focused exclusively on tyre testing. Montagny tested constructions throughout the day, while Trulli concentrated on compounds, with very promising results.

Other Notes

Both drivers completed significant mileage during the day, concentrating primarily on shorter runs.

The team will conclude this week’s testing tomorrow.
