german gp. the race.
A horrific accident at the
start of the race when Burti launched his car off the back of Michael Schumacher’s
stricken Ferrari and bounced off Bernoldi’s Arrows, led to a re-start. All drivers were fine and re-started
the race in the spare cars. The two Wiiliams drivers got off to a good start.
Almost immediately de la Rosa collided with Heidfeld putting them both out. Barrichello proceeded to get past both McLarens as he was on a light fuel
load, making 2 stops. On lap 7, Zonta ran into the back of Verstappen’s Arrows and dropped
bits of car all over the track. He pitted for repairs, but soon had to retire. Jarno had a scrap with Panis which saw two stopper Panis get past to take 9th
place. Keen to reclaim his position, Jarno outbraked himself and spun, losing several positions. It didn’t
matter in the end, as Jarno had to retire on lap 35 with his third terminal mechanical
problem this weekend, when he was in 8th place. By this time,
drivers already retired with
engine and other technical problems included Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen, Montoya, DC, Kimi, and Eddie
Irvine. To compound Eddie Jordan’s misery, both BARs
finished and Villeneuve was on the podium.
Top 6: Ralf, Barrichello, Viileneuve, Fisichella, Button and Alesi.

“It was very difficult and
disappointing. I was struggling to keep pace in the first stint and I spun off
while battling with Panis for position. He tried to overtake me at the first chicane but
he overshot the corner and jumped the chicane, coming out in front of me. The
regulations say that he should have let me have my position back, so I tried to
overtake him at the next chicane but he closed the door, which I didn't expect.
I had to turn quickly to avoid an accident and unfortunately spun.” off, losing valuable
time and positions. This has been a tough weekend and one to forget.'

german gp. warm up.
Jordan’s
unfortunate weekend continued when Jarno’s Honda engine expired 5
minutes into the warm up. Luckily, this time
he is not far from the stadium section and is able to get back to use
the T-car for the rest of the session, but he can only manage 14th fastest. Zonta manages to spin and slide
into the tyre wall before he has even set a time. It’s not going well. Top 6: Ralf, JPM, DC, MS, Rubens, Mika.

german gp. qualifying.
Jordan are not having a good
weekend. Zonta is blocked on his first run, and can only manage 15th
place by the end of the session. All is going as well as can be expected for Jarno who is 8th when
he leaves the pits for his third run, hoping to improve. Unfortunately his
engine blows up on one of the long straights and he is stuck at the far end of
the circuit. Unable to find any transport back to the pits for several minutes,
by the time he gets back it is too late to go out in the spare car. Other
drivers have improved their own times by now, so Jarno is left to make the best of
10th place. Top 6: JPM, Ralf, Mika, MS,
DC, Barrichello. The success of the Williams
team today emphasises the nature of the circuit, as their powerful cars come good.

'This is a very disappointing
result for me and the team. The car wasn't bad but it was tough to keep pace
with the front runners. I was trying hard but unfortunately the engine failed
on my third run and I had to stop at the far end of the circuit, really far
away. The marshals weren't very professional because they didn't know where to
send me so that I could be taken back to the garage. I figured it out by myself
but that cost me some time so I wasn’t able to make it back in time to go out
in the T-car for a final run. Considering I only made two times laps however,
10th place is not bad, just frustrating, as we could have been
higher up the grid.”

german gp. saturday practice.
Not a great practice f or the Jordan boys. Zonta lost time in the first session when the car failed out on track. At the end of the first session, Jarno was 12th fastest with 1:41.887, Ricardo 14th with 1:42.424. Top time was 1:39.937 from Michael Schumacher. Top 6: MS, Barrichello, Ralf, Montoya, DC, Hakkinen. In the second session, Jarno improved to 8th towards the end of the session but was bumped down to 10th right at the end, with a time of 1:40.894. Zonta was 14th with 1:41.534. Top 6: Ralf (1:39.188), Montoya, MS, Hakkinen, Heidfeld, Barrichello.

Bizarre results from today’s
practice saw Eddie Irvine top the time charts with 1:41.424. The second Jaguar of Pedro de la Rosa was 6th
fastest with 1:42.302. Obviously trying to impress the German car market! Top 6
overall was Irvine, Montoya, Hakkinen,Barrichello, M.
Schumacher, de la Rosa. Jarno was 10th
quickest in the first session with 1:43.970. His new team mate Ricardo Zonta was just behind in 11th
with 1:44.333. In the second session, Jarno improved his best time to 1:42.941, finishing in 9th
position. Zonta improved his time to 1:43.461 but that only got him 13th
position. Surprise of the day were the Benettons, especially Fisichella who finished 11th
quickest. Button was 15th.

“We spent the two sessions
working on car set-up for a race distance and trying to find the optimum balance.
I ran with the two different tyre options that Bridgestone has brought for this
race and also checked brake performance, as a good brake balance is very
important at this circuit. We had a few problems with the brakes and need to
look at the data to find out what the exact problem is, but I am generally
happy with the car and looking forward to qualifying.”

A wet start to the day
enabled Jarno to run several laps to work on wet weather set-up. He ran 70
laps altogether finishing 4th fastest with a time of 1:25.14. The
two Jaguars were quickest….Irvine with 1:24.10 and de
la Rosa with 1:24.53. Then came Barrichello with 1:25.05. Zonta’s best time was 1:26.18 in 10th place after 43 laps.
After the track dried out, Jarno worked on brake and tyre evaluation for Hockenheim and was very
pleased with the car’s handling.

Jarno joined Ricardo Zonta testing at Monza today. Several teams are taking the opportunity to test before the Italian GP
. Jarno was 4th quickest
with 1:25.13. Top time was set by Ralf Schumacher with a 1:23.94, then Montoya with 1:24.46 and Wurz with 1:25.00. Zonta was 8th quickest
with 1:26.09. Both Jordan drivers completed all available engine mileage,
working on chassis set-up, aerodynamic development and a brake test programme.

Jarno made a great start but his race ended on the first lap after 600 yards, just after Copse corner, when DC inexplicably turned towards Jarno and the Jordan and the McLaren collided. Jarno was hugging the kerb , and although he braked he was unable to avoid the collision, which caused him to spin into the gravel with broken suspension. DC carried on for 3 laps, but was terminally damaged and had to retire. Mika Hakkinen went on to win, followed by Michael Schumacher in second and a fortunate Barrichello third. Then came Montoya, Raikkonen and Heidfeld. HHF was seventh, after a bad start when he lost a few places and was unable to make them up.

With both EJ11
cars proving very competitive and well balanced throughout the weekend, coupled
with two promising grid positions, the Benson and Hedges Jordan Honda team was
optimistic for a more fruitful race than was achieved at its home Grand Prix.
A first corner
collision with Coulthard on the opening lap unfortunately ended Trulli’s race before it really started. Frentzen lost four places
leading up to the first corner after a poor start and was then hindered by
understeer in the high speed corners after his second pit stop.

“To be out of the race at such an early
stage is incredibly disappointing for me and the team. The car
has been running so well all weekend and
with my strong grid position we were looking in very good
shape to finish in the points today, with
even a podium being possible. I had a very good start and was
next to David on
the inside line by the first corner, where there is normally no need to brake
on the first
lap. I don’t know whether he just didn’t
see me or didn’t want to give up his fight, but either way, he
closed the door leaving me with no more
room to move. I did brake but was unable to avoid an
accident so our cars touched. It was a
racing incident and David and I will talk about it, although
generally, I think the car on the outside
should leave enough room to move for the inside car.”
Eddie Jordan, Chief Executive
“Today has been extremely disappointing
and not to score any points after such a promising
performance
throughout the weekend is the last thing the team wanted at its home Grand
Prix. Not
only is it bad for our Championship fight
but sad for the fantastic number of supporters and Jordan
employees who came to see Jordan race
today. I wish we could have given them a better result.
Jarno’s race was unfortunately over almost before it started
and it seems that seventh place was the
best Heinz was
able to achieve today.”

The track looked dry at the start
of qualifying but there were damp patches around the circuit and all the
drivers waited for almost half the session before venturing out. At one point
the timing system failed, but when it was sorted out, Jarno was 4th
fastest and HHF 5th fastest. Jarno was just three thousandths
of a second behind DC in 3rd. During his last flying lap, Jarno was
two tenths ahead of his own fastest time and on the verge of taking third when
a damaged front pushrod caused the car to stop out on the circuit. As it was, Jarno was just five
tenths of a second away from pole. Top 6: MS, Mika, DC, JT, HHF, Barrichello.

“This really
is a great result for me and the team, especially with our cars starting from
the second and third rows of the grid. The car was running very well but it was
quite difficult for me to judge my performance as I was completely unaware of
my lap times due to the official timing system’s failure, which didn’t record
some of my times. My lap time improved with each run and my last outing was
proving to be a very fast lap, but unfortunately my car’s front left suspension
broke after I ran over the kerb on the exit at Becketts so I had to stop on the
circuit. It’s a great shame as I was two tenths up on my previous best and I
believe I could have finished ahead of Coulthard for third place as I had more
to give and the car was performing brilliantly.”

Jarno Trulli on the British Grand Prix
“It feels good to come to Silverstone
having scored points in France and it would be great to perform well at this

Today Jarno took over from HHF to join Ricardo Zonta in the 4 day test in warm
and overcast conditions. Jarno posted the 4th fastest time with 1:24.87 after
completing 52 laps. He was carrying out tyre comparisons for Bridgestone and
working on set-up and brake evaluation for the Italian GP. Zonta had a spin in the
afternoon which caused significant
damage to the car, when a component failed. Zonta
was 6th quickest with 1:25.49.
Fastest of all was Coulthard with 1:24.03.

Two more points at last for Jarno, finishing 5th
in today’s race. After running in 5th place for most of the
weekend….in yesterday’s practice and qualifying, and starting the race in 5th……Jarno managed to lose a
place to Montoya at the start, quickly followed by Barrichello on a light fuel load.
However, after a proliferation of pit stops , Jarno ran in 6th
for quite a while, until Montoya retired with an engine problem. Top 6: MS, Ralf, Barrichello, DC, JT, Heidfeld. HHF was 8th.

Frentzen 8th (1 lap down)
A two car finish and Jarno Trulli’s fifth place returned the team to its points scoring form and
further
demonstrated Benson and Hedges Jordan Honda’s ability to challenge the top
three
teams.
Trulli’s strong and
consistent race performance enabled him to be the only driver to complete the full
race distance behind the four leading cars and provide the team with two, well
deserved additional points. The Italian’s nine points scored so far this season
is his record achievement to date. Frentzen drove a solid race to eighth
place, although his extended first pit stop lost him positions to the Saubers.

“It is a great
result for me and the team to finish another race in the points and be fighting
with the top teams. You really need to be determined to achieve good results
and the whole team was certainly determined today. I made a good start but
unfortunately lost a place to Montoya as he had better acceleration. Barrichello then overtook
me on the straight. The car set-up was perfect and I really pushed hard to keep
pace with the front runners, but they were just much quicker than me. In order
to have the speed to challenge the top teams we need to develop our engine
power. I lost a bit of time due to the rear tyres but after the pit stop I was
achieving very good lap times. I really enjoyed the race and feel we achieved
the best that we could today.”
Eddie Jordan, Chief
Executive
“It feels
great to be back in the points and bring both cars home. We had a small problem
during Heinz’s pit stop
which unfortunately lost him a couple of places but he drove a very solid race.
Jarno proved to be
very competitive over the whole race distance. It feels good to be back on form
going into our home Grand Prix at Silverstone.”

Jarno managed 4 complete laps this time and got quicker with each one,
finally achieving 5th place on the grid. For a short while Jarno was leapfrogged by his team

Frentzen 7th 1:13.815
A strong
performance from the Benson and Hedges Jordan Honda team, with Jarno Trulli and
Heinz-Harald
Frentzen qualifying on
the third and fourth rows of the grid respectively.
Trulli clinched his
fifth position in the final seconds of the hour-long session, to qualify in the
top six for the sixth time this year.
Frentzen’s seventh place demonstrated a strong and focused performance,
especially considering the running time he lost during the morning’s practice
sessions which hindered his work on car set-up. He was held up by Panis on his final run,
when he was two tenths up on his previous best lap. This ended his chances of
taking sixth place.

“It is great
qualifying in fifth and I am very happy for the team and myself. I think we did
a good job.The car felt perfect today and I must congratulate Bridgestone for
the excellent tyres they have developed for this race which seem to have a very
competitive pace with less degradation and great balance. This good car and
tyre package is a major step forward for the team, and the work we did during
the test session here last month and throughout this weekend has really paid
off. I would like to apologise to Michael as I think I might have blocked
him when I misjudged a corner. Although I was pulling away, I think I held him
up.
Eddie Jordan, Chief
Executive
“It was an
exciting qualifying and I am very happy for Jarno and Heinz. Heinz has had a difficult couple of
races, but has come here very focused and is fighting hard. He was held up by Panis on his last
quick lap which is a shame, as it was possible that he could have made up one
more place. Jarno’s last
qualifying run to pip Montoya to fifth place showed a very competent effort. We
have approached this weekend with a strategy that seems to have worked very
well. Focusing on tyre choice yesterday was key, so I now hope we can carry
this strong performance into tomorrow’s race. I would also like to congratulate
Ralf on his first
pole position.”

A good showing for Jarno in both sessions. He was 6th
quickest in the first session with a time of 1:15.787, although M. Schumacher was top with
1:13.729. Then came DC, Ralf, RB, JPM. HHF was just behind Jarno in 7th with 1:15.866. In the second session, Jarno was 5th fastest
with 1:14.482. Top 6: MS, Ralf, DC, Mika, JT,
RB. HHF was 11th with
1:14.992.
Trulli’s EJ11 showed a front suspension sensor fault during
the installation lap, losing Trulli
some running time in the first forty-five
minute session while the problem was rectified.
An engine misfire on the outlap of Frentzen’s first timed run was resolved by changing electrical
engine components.
