french gp. friday practice.

In Friday practice today, Jarno completed a massive 52 laps and finished overall 9th quickest with 1:16.187. In the first session he was 6th quickest behind the Ferraris, McLarens and Williams, with 1:16.570. Hakkinen was fastest with 1:155.889. HHF was  9th with 1:16.868. HHF never improved that time in the second session, when DC was fastest with 1:14.935. Top 6: DC, Irvine, Villeneuve, Hakkinen, Ralf, Montoya.

Jarno Trulli 9th

1:16.187 52 laps

Heinz-Harald Frentzen 13th

1:16.868 45 laps

The Benson and Hedges Jordan Honda team had a productive practice session, making

good progress with tyre and car set-up configuration for the race.

Frentzen experienced brake balance problems during the first session, with improvements

being made in the hour break to achieve a better setting to suit the track.

Trulli found a very good car set-up and is happy with his EJ11’s handling and behaviour.

“It was a positive practice session as we developed a good set-up for the race distance here

and I’m happy with the car’s handling and behaviour. Tomorrow’s track conditions will certainly be different as they change so frequently at this circuit, so we will have to work hard on qualifying set-up in the morning. I don’t think the lap times today are a true representation, as some cars were suddenly very fast at the end, so may have been running lower fuel levels. The track conditions today were similar to those at the test a month ago which made the data we gained then very beneficial.”

Jarno Trulli on the French Grand Prix

“Magny-Cours is a very technical circuit where I enjoy driving. I know the circuit quite well as I’ve

completed a lot of testing here in the past. Last year’s French Grand Prix was a tough race, but I

managed to finish in the points so would like to score a few more here this year.”

european gp. the race.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen DNF (traction control failure causing Frentzen to spin)

Jarno Trulli DNF (loss of gearbox oil pressure)

Trulli ran a strong sixth place for the majority of his race. After thirty five laps, his engineers

noticed a loss of pressure with his EJ11’s gearbox, which ultimately ended his race on lap 44. The Italian ran competitive lap times right up until his retirement and had pushed Hakkinen and Villeneuve earlier in the race.

Although starting eighth, Frentzen lost two places but maintained tenth position for the opening stages of the race until his pit stop on lap 29.He was running in eighth when a sudden failure with his traction control caused him to spin at the exit of the hairpin with just nineteen laps of the race remaining.

Not too many retirements in this race and fairly uneventful. Ralf incurred a stop/go penalty for crossing  the white line at the exit of the pit lane, after he and his brother had pitted together, and Michael maintained the lead. This kept Ralf off the podium. The race was won by Michael Schumacher, second was JPM, then DC, Ralf, Barrichello and Hakkinen.

Position: DNF (loss of gearbox oil pressure)

Chassis: EJ11 / 05

“I made a very good start and moved up to sixth by the end of the first lap. The early part of the race was going very well and I was trying hard to overtake Hakkinen. I was able to keep pace very well with the leading pack and although I did experience a problem downshifting, I was still pulling away from the group behind me. The car felt very well balanced so I could continue to push hard after my pit stop and achieve some very good lap times. Unfortunately on lap forty four, a lack of gearbox oil pressure which my engineers had been aware of for some laps but were unable to rectify, caused the gearbox to seize so I had to retire. It’s a great shame as l was looking very strong in the race with the chance to score some points. We have been very unlucky this year and lost a lot of points as a result.”

Eddie Jordan, Chief Executive

“It is clear that we are not realising our potential. The problems seem to be different at each race which is hugely frustrating, and means we have to have ongoing analysis to establish the causes for each retirement. In the meantime, with the top three teams opening up their lead, the battle for fourth place remains open and we will keep fighting.”

23rd June 2001

european gp. qualifying.

Jarno qualified 7th for the race tomorrow, alongside team mate Frentzen in 8th. This is the 8th time Jarno has out-qualified HHF. Top 6: MS, Ralf, JPM, RB, DC, Mika.

Jarno Trulli 7th1:16.138

Heinz-Harald Frentzen 8 th1:16.376

Frentzen and Trulli achieved strong results in what proved to be a difficult qualifying session and will both start tomorrow’s race from the fourth row of the grid.

Trulli was unable to complete his four timed runs, aborting his last two outings due to traffic and dust on the track. This hindered the Italian from improving on his qualifying time which was set on his second run.

Position: 7th

Time: 1:16.138

“After this morning’s practice, I predicted we could be in seventh and eighth behind the three top teams, so I’m happy that my qualifying position is the least I had hoped for. It was a very difficult qualifying though, with a lot of cars out at the same time putting dust on the track, so I had to abort my last two runs because of traffic and also a yellow flag. I could have improved my lap time as there was more potential in the car, but I did the best I could given the situation on the track. The car feels good but I think it will be a tough race.”

Eddie Jordan, Chief Executive

“Jarno and Heinz both gave strong performances today, qualifying very well. It was good to see Heinz back on form and he did a good job, especially considering the little running time he has had in the car over the last month. Jarno produced another solid qualifying result. With the emergence of Williams, fourth is a good position for us at the moment and we’re eager to finish in the points tomorrow.”

23rd June 2001

european gp. saturday practice.

In Saturday practice today, Jarno was 12th quickest in the first session and finished 7th in the second with a time of 1:16.385. HHF was 8th in both sessions. In the first, MS topped the times with 1:16.308, but had a mechanical problem that wiped out his whole second session. Another Schumacher, Ralf, was quickest in the second session with 1:15.355.

Both Trulli and Frentzen were very happy to have established a good car balance.

Trulli continued with race set-up work during the first session, evaluating changes made to his

EJ11 overnight before transferring his efforts to qualifying set-up in the second session.

Frentzen spent both sessions working through the set-up programme for qualifying. Analysis of data and theoretical work enabled the team to achieve a good car balance for the German after losing running time during yesterday’s practice session.

22nd June 2001

european gp. friday practice.

After the first session of practice at Nurburgring today, Jarno finished 5th quickest behind the two McLarens and two Ferraris with a time of 1:18.755. Top 6: DC, Hakkinen, MS, RB, JT, Kimi. HHF was 13th with a 1:19.988. Overall, after the second session, Jarno finished 7th with 1:18.133. Top 6: Hakkinen, DC, Ralf, MS, RB, Montoya. HHF had an off after 10 minutes  which ended his session there and then, so he finished 19th with the same time as before.

Jarno Trulli 7th 1:18.133 39 laps

Heinz-Harald Frentzen 19th 1:19.988 17 laps

Both Frentzen and Trulli worked methodically through their race set-up programmes,

commenting that the cars felt very consistent although track conditions were very slippery with a low grip level. Frentzen returned to the cockpit feeling very well and fit to drive. His EJ11 sustained minor damage to the left bargeboard when he missed the chicane and ran over the kerb during the first session. The German was then unable to improve on his morning’s time, causing his unrepresentative nineteenth place, when early into the second session he span into the gravel at the last corner and lost forty five minutes of valuable car set-up and running time. Jarno Trulli enjoyed a more productive day, finishing in seventh place

“I am quite happy with the car’s consistency and the work we have achieved today by running through the race set-up programme. During the first session the car felt well balanced and, although we tried some further adjustments in the second hour, we couldn’t find any significant improvements to fine-tune the balance. We will analyse the data this afternoon and plan our direction for tomorrow, as there is still some work to do. We looked competitive from the first outing this morning, which is usually a good sign, although we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to be sure.”

Tim Holloway, Head of Engineering

“It was a mixed day. Jarno worked through a very good proportion of the work in preparation for the race and is looking in good shape. Heinz lost most of the second session when he span off at the last corner, which makes things quite difficult for him now with an increased workload tomorrow. Both cars are running well and it was a relatively trouble-free practice session from a technical viewpoint.”

Jarno Trulli on the European Grand Prix

“I know this track very well as I drove here many times in the German F3 Championship. I’m looking forward to

Nurburgring as I have very good memories from when I achieved my first podium here in 1999. It would be great to manage a similar result again this year.”

silverstone. testing.

Final day of the test and Jarno and Ricardo spent the day tyre testing for the next Grands Prix at Nurburgring, Magny-Cours and Silverstone. Jarno completed 80 laps with a time of 1:24.18, only good enough for 9th position overall. Zonta did 74 laps, in a trouble free day. His time was 1:23.17, in 5th position.  Top driver was Alex Wurz for McLaren with 1:22.08.

13th June 2001

silverstone. testing.

The weather continued fine and warm. Jarno completed 48 laps and was 7th fastest with 1:24.42, working on general set up, suspension geometry and weight distribution, along with further tyre tests. Zonta had the afternoon free of testing duties when the car was sent back to the factory for a major overhaul. Top driver was  Barrichello for Ferrari with 1:22.64.

12th June 2001

silverstone. testing.

At a dry  and warm Silverstone, Jarno and Ricardo Zonta began a 3 day test for the Jordan team. Most teams were present as it is their last chance to test here before the British GP. Both Jordan drivers had a productive day, with Jarno posting the fastest time of 1:23.14 after 61 laps. Zonta was 4th fastest with 1:24.34. They tested the HANS safety device which is compulsory for this test, then concentrated on general chassis setup for the BGP. In the afternoon they also did some tyre testing for Bridgestone.

canadian gp. the race.

A disappointing finish to the race for Jarno who would have finished in the points if he had not had to retire with brake hydraulic failure a few laps from the end. Until then he had run in 4th place for most of the race.

Ricardo Zonta 7th

Jarno Trulli DNF (brake hydraulic failure)

An exciting race with both Trulli and Zonta showing strong and faultless performances

Trulli raced in the top six for the majority of the race but retired six laps from the finish with a

brake hydraulic problem

Zonta, who fought off strong competition during the race from McLaren, Williams and Ferrari,

finished just outside the points in seventh place

“I made a good start and was having a very strong race up in the top six for the entire time.

Unfortunately, for the last ten or so laps, I just couldn’t push anymore to retain my fourth place as

there was a problem with the brakes which caused me to retire just six laps from the end. I am very

disappointed and frustrated because I keep suffering from different problems which are stopping

me from finishing races and winning points. It’s very important that we now work hard to resolve the

problems that have hindered us over the last few races, and return to our competitive form.”

9th June 2001

canadian gp. qualifying.

Jarno qualified an excellent 4th on the grid for tomorrow’s race with a time of 1:16.459. His first flying lap put him on pole, he was unable to better it,  but it was good enough for 4th place by the end of the qualifying hour.  At the very end of the session, Nick Heidfeld crashed, causing a red flag and Jarno was one of the drivers affected on his last run. However, DC got in a good final run and just pipped Jarno for 3rd. Zonta qualified 12th with a time of 1:17328. Top 6: M.Schumacher, R.Schumacher, DC, Trulli, Barrichello, Panis.

“I have mixed feeling about qualifying. I am very happy to be on the second row of the grid, but also

upset that I was denied the chance to improve my position on my last timed run. The session was red

flagged on my last outlap, and wrongly thinking that the session was over, the marshals called me in

to Parc Ferme. I was in third place at this time, but this delay meant there was not enough time to re-fuel

and get out to complete the outlap before the flag. At least starting from fourth on the grid I have a

good chance to do well in the race tomorrow. I am very sorry that Heinz will not race alongside me on

Sunday. It’s never nice for a driver to not be able to race, but I look forward to seeing him back with

the team, stronger than ever, at Nurburgring. For this race though, it’s good to have Ricardo standing

in. He has worked hard on the development of the EJ11 and I hope he has a very good race.”

9th June 2001

canadian gp. saturday practice.

HHF has been sent home for medical tests following his accident yesterday. It is feared he may still be feeling the effects of his accident in Monaco, as he is having trouble with his eyes and his balance. His place in the race will be taken by Ricardo Zonta.

In practice this morning, Jarno  finished 9th fastest with 1:17.618. Fastest overall was M.Schumacher with 1:16.200. He was followed by DC , Hakkinen, Barrichello, Heidfeld, Raikonnen, Panis, and R .Schumacher. Zonta was 15th with 1:18.595, losing much of the second session after an off.

8th June 2001

canadian gp. friday practice.

David Coulthard was quickest in the first session with a 1:18.763 followed by the two Ferraris. Jarno came out 7th with 1:20.513 and HHF was 11th with 1:20.909. In the second session, Hakkinen was first with 1:17.672 to make it a McLaren 1st and 2nd. Jarno was 8th with 1:18.990. closely followed by HHF in 9th with 1:19.057.

Benson and Hedges Jordan Honda gained productive results and useful information as it worked through a race set-up programme during the two, sixty-minute practice sessions.

Both Frentzen and Trulli completed a good number of laps, commenting that their EJ11 cars were well-balanced. although further work is required to achieve optimum brake settings for this circuit. Frentzen’s tyres picked up dirt on his final run in the closing minutes of the second session, causing him to spin into a tyre wall in the first sector. Damage was sustained to the rear bodywork and suspension

“We had a trouble free session and learned a lot about the car and set-up for this circuit,

although are struggling to find the best set-up for race conditions. The car’s balance is good

and I think, as usual, we will be quick during qualifying. There’s still some work to do though to find a more suitable race trim. The new brake ducts we are running work very well, so this is a positive step forward.”

Jarno Trulli on the Canadian Grand Prix

"Canada is a very high speed track that I really do like. Our car always performs well here, so

hopefully we can achieve even better results than before as we seem to have a good package with

the EJI 1. It's particularly important to have good car balance at this circuit as it's so hard on the

brakes."
