magny cours. testing.

HHF joined Jarno for testing this morning, but felt unwell after 11 laps and was replaced by Ricardo Zonta, who  had to travel back from Monaco, in the afternoon. Jarno completed 100 laps with the 10th quickest time of 1:16.400. He spent the morning working on  set- up for the French GP and engine mapping for Honda, and the afternoon tyre testing for Bridgestone. Zonta was 7th quickest with 1:15.810 after 34 laps.

magny cours. testing.

In Magny Cours today, Jarno Trulli and Ricardo Zonta resumed testing duties for the Jordan team. 8 other teams were present also as it is their last chance to test at this circuit before the French GP. R Schumacher was quickest with a time of 1:15.120. Jarno’s time was 1:16.530 after 75 laps, in 7th place,  and Ricardo was 6th with 1:16.370 after 59 laps. Conditions were very hot and both drivers concentrated on developing general chassis set-up for the French GP. HHF continues with Jarno tomorrow.

Jarno Trulll DNF (hydraulic problem)

Heinz-Harald Frentzen DNF (accident)

A dlsappointing race for the Benson and Hedges Jordan Honda team, as neither Frentzen norTrulli made it to the chequered flag.Trulli's race was cut short due to a hydraulic problem which led to a fire on lap 31 and Frentzen  ran into the Armco in the tunnel on lap 50.

DC failed to start for the installation race and had to start the race at the back of the grid. After several retirements, including Hakkinen, Ralf, Montoya, Panis  and the two Jordan drivers, he managed to make up time and finish 5th. Michael Schumacher won the race, Barrichello second and Irvine third. Also in the points, Villeneuve, and Alesi.

Position: DNF (hydraulic problem)

Chassis; EJ11/O5

T-car Chassis: EJl1102

"After a good start and a trouble free first part of the race, I was struggling over five or six laps with

the rear of the car. The next thing I knew, the car stopped at Rascasse with flames comlng out of the

back. I'm not sure what the cause was but it seams to have been a hydraulic problem, with the car

losing pressure over those laps, whlch explains why the handling became difficult. Until then, the car

felt very good and I was not really pushing too hard as I was trying to save the tyres. Monte Carlo is

clearly not a circuit where things go well for me. This result is so frustrating because we seem to be competitive. But we must be in a position to finish more races."

26th May 2001

monaco gp. qualifying.

Qualifying in Monaco failed to live up to expectations for the Jordan team, with Jarno qualifying 8th and HHF 13th, HHF’s  session included  a spin on his final fast lap.

Jarno Trulli Car 12

Position: 8th

Time: 1:18.921

Chassis: EJ11/05

“It was a very tough qualifying session as I expected, and I’m disappointed, particularly as we seemed

competitive during morning practice. Unfortunately, my last timed run was hindered as I was blocked by a

slow Ferrari on the driving line in the tunnel, which I found very frustrating since in the drivers’ briefing it was

agreed that cars going slowly should stop before the tunnel to allow drivers on their flying lap to pass. The

car does not seem to be that well balanced with the tyres that we have for this weekend. I had a problem with

lack of grip in the low speed corners and the car seems to be quite nervous, so we have some work to do for

tomorrow but anything is possible in the race, especially at this circuit.”

26th May 2001

monaco gp. saturday practice.

Saturday practice in Monaco saw Jarno finish 6th quickest with a time of 1:19.307.  HHF was 10th with 1:20.064 after losing the last part of the second session when the car left the track  near Beau Rivage. Top 6: Hakkinen (1:18.282), MS, RS, DC. Irvine, Trulli. In the first session when Jarno only did 5 laps, he was 10th with 1:22.562 and HHF was 8th with 1:22.373 after 11 laps. The first session was disrupted for 20 minutes while Jos Verstappen’s Arrows  and the mess it’s blown engine had created at La Rascasse was cleared.

24th May 2001

monaco gp. thursday practice.

It is Thursday practice in Monaco and no track action on Friday. In today’s first pracice session, both Jordan drivers set fast times finishing in 3rd and 4th places. Jarno was 3rd with 1:22.667 and HHF 4th with 1: 23.04. M. Schumacher and DC were 1st and 2nd respectively. Top time was 1:21.557. In the second session, Jarno completed 48 laps and finished 5th fastest with a time of 1:21.048. HHF was 7th with 1:21.505 after 46 laps. Top 6: Hakkinen (1:19.853), MS, RS, RB, JT, DC.

“It is difficult to find the best set-up for this circuit as the track conditions change so much over the

weekend. The car’s balance does not feel as good as I’d like at the moment and we still have a

lot of work to do, particularly with the tyres. Today, we worked through general car set-up for the

race with different settings comparisons. Our race configuration seems pretty competitive, but we

will have to look at the data to see what alterations we need to make for Saturday as qualifying is

so important at this track.”

Jarno Trulli on the Monaco Grand Prix

“Monaco is a very special race and you want and need everything to run smoothly, as if you make one

small mistake you will damage the car and hinder running time. Every year you want to improve on the last

year’s performance. The track is unforgiving and there is no time to relax as the car needs constant

attention.”

CHASSIS DETAILS FOR THIS RACE

Heinz-Harald Frentzen EJ11 chassis 06

Jarno Trulli EJ11 chassis 05

T-car (Thursday Practice - set up for HHF) EJ11 chassis 02

(Sunday Race – set-up for JT)

T-car (Saturday Qualifying – set up for HHF) EJ11 chassis 04

(Sunday Race – set up for HHF)

4 chassis are available  due to the increased risk of damage to the cars through the proximity to the track of the Armco barriers and walls.

Following the Valencia testing, several new aerodymanic parts are available for this race.

Jordan GP have confirmed that their drivers will perform manual starts in this race, rather than depend on launch control which has let them down in the last two races. This is partly a safety issue due to the narrowness of the Monaco start.

18th May 2001

valencia testing.

Another successful day’s testing for the Jordan team saw Jarno post the 2nd fastest time with 1:13.14. Villeneuve was quickest with 1:13.12. Zonta took HHF’s place and posted 1:14.11, 5th fastest. Jarno ran 79 laps working on suspension geometry, development aerodynamic parts for Monaco and more tyre testing, with a similar programme for Ricardo who did another 72 laps.

On the subject of the Austrian GP start and launch control, Jarno has been quoted as saying:

“It was the first time I have ever stalled on the grid and I will never use the system again. I was not comfortable sitting on the grid like that. I personally won’t use it. As for the other people I don’t know, but it’s going to be very dangerous if anyone stalls on the grid at Monaco.”   Good decision, Jarno.

17th May 2001

valencia testing.

Jarno took over today from Ricardo Zonta to join HHF in testing duties. HHF worked on chassis set-up and Jarno worked on general set-up and aerodynamic parts comparisons in the morning followed by tyre testing for Bridgestone in the afternoon. Times: HHF was 2nd quickest with 1:14.13 and Jarno 10th with 1:14.84. David Coulthard broke the lap record with 1:12.74.

13th May 2001

austrian gp. the race.

A bad race for Jordan Honda as both drivers failed to start the race. Jarno’s  stalled car was restarted in the pit lane but he re-entered the race, which was under the safety car, by going through a red light in the pit lane which led to his disqualification. The race was won by David Coulthard with Michael Schumacher second after Rubens Barrichello had been ordered by Ferrari to let Michael through. So Rubens finished in 3rd.

Jarno Trulli DNF (black flagged)

Heinz-Harald Frentzen DNF (gearbox) or rather DNS (did not start)

After strong performances all weekend, Benson and Hedges Jordan Honda disappointingly

comes away from the Austrian Grand Prix without points. This is the first race this season where

Jordan has not finished in the top six. The team retains its fourth place in the Constructors'

Championship

Both Frentzen and Trulli were unable to move off the start. Analysis showed that Frentzen

suffered a broken gearbox, the cause of which is being investigated. Trulli's engine stalled due

to a problem with the new launch control system. He was later 'black flagged' and made to

retire after the stewards ruled he had driven through a red light at the pit lane exit.

Position; DNF (black flagged)

T-car Chassis: EJl1 04

"I am very disappolnted with today's race, as having qualified fifth we should have had a good result. The launch control system didn't work at the start so the engine stalled. I noticed the system wasn't working properly during warm-up this morning and although we made some adjustments, it clearly wasn't enough. I was pushed into the pit lane and restarted the race behind the safety car. I was shown some blue flags as I was one lap down, but was then 'black flagged' for leaving the pit lane while the exit light was red."

Eddie Jordan, Chief Executive

"I've had some bad races and this was one of them! After warm-up I really felt that we were in good

shape for the race as both cars ran well with good balance. Unfortunately it wasn't to be as Heinz

had a gearbox problem that jammed the gears at the start so his car couldn't move, and Jarno's

engine stalled after launch control failed. It would appear that the revs were possibly too low for the

launch control to activate, which is a fault by the team and not Honda. Jarno had to retire after being

shown a black flag for leavlng the pit lane to join the race when the pit exit light was red. It's very

disappointing far both drivers and the team and we will be having a thorough de-brief to establish the

reasons for our lack of performance today."

austrian gp. qualifying.

Jarno Trulli 5th 1:10.202

Heinz-Harald Frentzen 11th 1:10.923

A very tight qualifying session that saw Trulli achieve a very competitive opening timed run to place

him fifth on the grid

Frentzen was unable to complete a clear timed lap, with understeer and lack of car balance hindering

his performance

Morning Practice: An engine failure after 5 laps resulted in Trulli losing the majority of the first and second sessions, although the mechanics completed a very rapid engine change to get the Italian back on track for the

last fifteen minutes

A productive and trouble free session for Frentzen

Jarno Trulli Car 12

Position: 5th

“I am very happy with this unexpected result, given the problems I had in practice. I want to thank the

team as they worked so hard to get me back on the track this morning and in the little time we had we

found a good set-up for qualifying. My first timed lap was the best, but unfortunately I couldn’t improve as

it felt like the car’s power was dropping away with every lap. We lose a lot of time in the third sector and

need to find out why, as this has also been the case in previous races here. For the race I would just be

happy to remain consistent and finish in the points.”

11th May 2001

austrian gp. friday practice.

A few problems for the Jordan team as Frentzen’s car is out of action for all of the first session due to a technical problem. Jarno sets only the 11th fastest time in the first session. Top 6, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Barrichello, Raikkonen, R. Schumacher and M. Schumacher. In the second session, although improving his time to 1:12.555, Jarno is classified 13th. HHF is 7th with 1:11.997. Top 6, DC, Hakkinen, Barrichello, RS, MS and Heidfeld.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen 7th 1:11.977 28 laps

Jarno Trulli 13th 1:12.555 45 laps

Frentzen’s first practice session was cut short after only five laps, due to a persisting hydraulic

problem that affected his steering. The team changed various parts during the hour break to ensure a

trouble free second session

Trulli’s EJ11 required new barge boards after he went off the track into the gravel during the second

session

“It was a difficult day as the track was dirty and the car wasn’t very well balanced. We just tried to

complete some long runs with heavy fuel and set-up the car for the race. There is still some work to do

tomorrow but I feel confident we can do well here.”

Jarno Trulli on the Austrian Grand Prix

“I have strong memories, good and bad, of Austria. 1997 was my debut season and I was leading the

Grand Prix when I stood in for Panis at Prost, until the engine failed. Austria is a beautiful place and I

think we can do well there. In the past I have experienced problems during the race so hopefully this

year we can get it right. It’s a twisty track that is hard on the brakes.”

3rd May 2001

silverstone testing.

Today conditions were fine and dry and the team had a productive day with both drivers completing maximum mileage. Jarno did 88 laps with a fastest time of 1:23.93. Zonta did 65 with a time of 1:24.94. The programme focussed on tyre evaluation, suspension geometries and testing evolution engines for Honda.

2nd May 2001

silverstone testing.

Jarno joined Ricardo Zonta testing for Jordan at Silverstone today. The morning was dry  and Jarno concentrated on dry chassis set-up work for the Austrian GP along with tyre testing. He was 4th quickest of all the drivers  with 1:25.35. Arrows, Sauber and BAR were also testing. After rain at lunchtime and during the afternoon Jarno and Ricardo switched to wet set-up and traction control, when Jarno posted the fastest time of 1:33.72.
