FAN CLUB TEST DAY AT SILVERSTONE

29 May 2002

There were 3000 team and sponsors’ guests at testing that day and they seemed to be all trying to get in at once! But having negotiated the traffic, without the benefit of the new Silverstone bypass yet, and the trek from the moon…..sorry the CAR PARK…..where the stewards were doing their best to win the competition for the car parked furthest from the centre

(I think ours won!), the hospitality suite was a welcome sight. Lisa and Adam were our staff for the day, and they very pleasantly supplied us with drinks on demand the whole time. The view from our upstairs suite was brilliant, overlooking both the pitlane and Woodcote corner. I swear some of our 40 guests hardly moved from there the whole day!
The weather had decided to be erratic, which is typical Silverstone, although there were long periods of fine weather between the showers on this particular day, the best of the three test days.

Due to the large numbers of guests on site, suite guests were not allowed in the paddock until after 2pm, so many of our members, especially those

who have not been to testing before, spent part of the time exploring the circuit. Silverstone has several good vantage points for those interested in photographing or just observing Formula 1 cars.
At lunchtime (and not forgetting that it’s the drivers’ lunchtime as well), we were privileged to have a personal visit from Jarno. Renault F1’s press officer, Bradley Lord, drove Jarno across from the paddock and to Linda’s surprise, stood back in the crowd, while Linda asked Jarno about his Monaco race and his thoughts about the forthcoming Canadian race. Jarno just about had time to sign everything that was presented by the fan club members before being whisked back to the Renault garage for the afternoon’s testing.

All the F1 teams were present except Minardi, so it was eventful day’s testing with a lot of running, as the teams prepared for the British Grand Prix in July. Some teams, like Renault F1, were also testing new developments for Canada. All the teams’ regular drivers were present except for Schumacher (Michael), Frentzen and Panis.
